In The Beginning

It's nearly 11pm on a Saturday night and the Olympics are blaring in the background. I'm waiting for Apolo to take the ice again, and while that is certainly newsworthy -- and more so if he wins his medal to become the most decorated Winter Olympian since Bonnie Blair -- what may be more newsworthy, personally, at least, is the official start of my blog.

You see, this blog has been a long time coming. Everyone has told me it is long overdue. And they're all right. They're right because I write, and when I'm not writing, I'm cooking. And when I'm not writing or cooking I'm planning what to write or cook the next time, which inevitably, will not be too far off in the future. So there it is. What does a writer/foodie do in 2010? Well, she starts a food blog, of course. So now, as of nearly 11pm on a Saturday night, there is one more food blog in a world already full up.

But that's ok. There is no grandiose plan for this blog. It is by no means a Julie and Julia. Do I secretly dream Dana Cowin or Ruth Reichl will stumble upon it late one night following some grand opening, and flush from her wine flight will seek me out to be her next great food writer? Of course. Who doesn't? But outside of that, it's simply a small space for me to share my thoughts and have somewhere to ramble regularly, specifically, on the eating experiences I find extraordinary, be it finally making it to Michael's Genuine for Sunday brunch, finding a new, albeit tried-and-true stone crab joint or creating restaurant quality meals within the confines of 404C.

I recently stumbled upon a quote by Anais Nin that has quickly become one of my favorites. "We write to taste life twice," she said, "in the moment and in retrospection." After all, how many times has a delicious dessert lingered on your tongue that you talked about it the next day, the next week? How often do you dream of that certain dish, be it Nanny's Matzoh Ball Soup or your favorite sushi spot's Ahi Tuna Pizza? For me, I know it is usually one time to many, and beyond dreaming about it and discussing it, I yearn to write about it, which brings us to this blog, a perfect place to begin. Tomorrow.
